VINTAGE 2016
VITIGNO Sangiovese
AREA OF PRODUCTION Montalcino Siena
PAIRING Meat, Cheese
A long-awaited, eagerly awaited vintage, 2016, characterized by an excellent climatic trend that was able to give wines of great stuff, especially in the Montalcino area. From Tenuta Il Greppo, 47 hectares set in the heart of the appellation, comes, at last, the expression of a Brunello that is already a legend! As per the textbook, Biondi-Santi's yields are very low (30-50 quintals per hectare) and the Sangiovese Grosso clusters are selected by hand, one by one, in the central weeks of September. Once in the winery, the grapes undergo fermentation and aging, in Slavonian oak barrels, for at least 3 years. Having finished its journey in the bottle, of at least 4 months, the Brunello di Montalcino Biondi Santi finally came to us, repaying the long wait!
Timeless nose that tells of currants, cassis and powder, violet powder and lavender, cinchona and walnut husk, with fresh, balsamic memories of resin and toasted pine nuts. Wonderful, sumptuous tasting, with a classic freshness in the foreground, followed by the progression of haematic and iron memories. Savory but with tannin that is already silky, this wine is big, huge, irrepressible but which, no doubt, still needs a long time to unfold in all its capabilities. Trust me: the wait will be rewarded!
It would be reductive to say what dishes to pair it with, given its perfection it would suffice to uncork it, pour it into a wide goblet to let it breathe a bit and then...close your eyes and let yourself go.
The Winery
The Biondi Santi family can be considered at one with the viticultural history of Montalcino. A century-long history, made of passion, expertise and love for the territory, which began in the mid-19th century thanks to the work and passion of Clemente Santi, the man who dedicated much of his life to the study of Sangiovese and, in particular, to Greppo, a farm owned by his mother Petronilla Canali. The first important recognitions came at the 1867 Universal Exposition in Paris, where Biondi Santi wines imposed themselves on the world wine scene for their absolute elegance. A path that has not stopped since then, consecrating the Biondi Santi family as an undisputed leader in the Montalcino area and for the production of Brunello. The central nucleus of the winery coincides with the historic Tenuta Greppo, with plants that, in some cases, exceed eighty years of age, and can now count on a viticultural extension of twenty-five hectares, in which only and exclusively sangiovese grosso vines are encountered. Its cultivation takes place on soils rich in marl and the harvest, completely manual, sees the very careful selection of the grapes, so that only the first choice is destined for the production of Brunello, coming from vines at least 10 years old for the "vintage" type and over 25 years old for the Riserva. Over time, the Greppo winery has not undergone any disruptive technological changes, except for the introduction of necessary modern equipment. The destemmed grapes, after crushing, ferment in large concrete tanks and vats at controlled temperatures; after which the new wine passes into Slavonian oak barrels for the appropriate period of maturation. A procedure in the sign of the most rigorous of traditions, for a Brunello that has written (and continues to write) the incredible winemaking history of Montalcino and all of Italy.
